The new exhibition hall, Hall 5, is finally open after three and a half years of construction, completing the modernisation of Messe Essen. Construction firm and contractor Implenia Hochbau handed over the keys to Messe Essen on September 24, 2019, marking the official completion of this major construction project, which undercut the 88.567 million euro budget by some 250,000 million euros. Beginning on May 2, 2016, the project, which was developed by SOP architects, included four meticulously planned construction phases implemented under the management of consultancy firm Drees & Sommer. The modernisation work was carried out without interruption to trade fair operations. The eye-catcher and architectural highlight of the new Messe Essen is a 2,000sqm glass foyer at the East Entrance to the trade fair centre. The new foyer serves as a gateway to the new, restructured exhibition area comprising a total of eight large halls on one level in place of the former 18 compartmentalised halls. The new structure is easier to navigate, the logistics are better, and it gives exhibitors new booth design possibilities. The overall exhibition space remains unchanged at around 110,000square metres.
